Best Grass Types for Ocala, FL Lawns — Which Sod Should You Choose?

A practical guide to choosing sod and grass types for Ocala lawns, from St. Augustine to Bahia and Zoysia.

A practical guide from 30+ years of sod installation experience in Marion County and Central Florida

Not all grass is the same — and in Ocala, Florida, choosing the wrong type of sod can mean years of frustration, excessive water bills, and a lawn that never quite looks right. Central Florida's sandy soil, year-round heat, and intense afternoon sun create specific conditions that favor certain grass varieties over others. Whether you're replacing a damaged lawn, moving into a new home, or starting a property from scratch, this guide will help you make the right decision.

At Green Horse Landscaping & Irrigation, we've installed sod on residential properties, HOA communities, commercial grounds, and horse ranches across Marion, Alachua, Citrus, Sumter, Lake, and Levy counties. Here's what we've learned about what works in this climate.

St. Augustine Grass — The Most Popular Choice in Ocala

St. Augustine is the most widely used lawn grass in Florida for good reason. Its broad, flat blades create a thick, lush appearance that most homeowners love. It handles the Florida heat well, grows quickly, and creates a dense carpet that naturally suppresses weeds.

  • Best for: Front yards, high-visibility areas, shaded yards (Floratam variety tolerates partial shade), properties near The Villages
  • Watering needs: Moderate to high — needs 2-3x per week in dry season
  • Mowing height: 3.5-4 inches
  • Weakness: Susceptible to chinch bugs (very common in Ocala) and brown patch fungus if overwatered
  • Cost: Mid-range — slightly more expensive than Bahia per pallet

Best varieties for Marion County: Floratam (most common), Seville (shade-tolerant), Palmetto (semi-shade tolerant)

Bahia Grass — The Low-Maintenance Workhorse

If you want a lawn that survives drought, minimal maintenance, and Florida's acidic sandy soil with minimal fuss, Bahia is your grass. It has deep roots that pull moisture from below the topsoil, making it naturally more drought-tolerant than St. Augustine.

  • Best for: Large rural properties, horse ranches, properties with well water systems, lower-maintenance residential lawns
  • Watering needs: Low — can often survive on rainfall alone in wet season
  • Mowing height: 3-4 inches
  • Weakness: Not as dense or visually "lush" as St. Augustine, produces seed heads that some homeowners dislike
  • Cost: Less expensive per pallet — good for large acreage

Note: Bahia is the dominant grass on most horse properties and ranchettes in the NW Ocala / Reddick / Morriston area due to its durability and low cost at scale.

Zoysia Grass — The Premium Option

Zoysia is gaining popularity in Marion County, particularly in higher-end communities and among homeowners who want a golf-course appearance with less frequent mowing. It's denser, slower-growing, and more heat-tolerant than St. Augustine.

  • Best for: High-end residential, front yards in HOA communities, properties in The Villages wanting a refined appearance
  • Watering needs: Low to moderate — once established, very drought-tolerant
  • Mowing height: 1-2.5 inches
  • Weakness: Slower to establish, more expensive per pallet, goes dormant and turns brown in cold winters
  • Cost: Higher — premium product

Bermuda Grass — For Commercial and High-Traffic Areas

Bermuda grass is primarily used in commercial settings, athletic fields, and areas with very high foot traffic. It's incredibly tough and recovers fast from damage but requires more frequent mowing and full sun to thrive.

  • Best for: Commercial property grounds, sports areas, horse arenas, high-traffic walkways
  • Not recommended for: Shaded residential lawns — will thin out and die without full sun

💡 Green Horse Recommendation for Most Ocala Homeowners: If you're choosing one grass for a residential lawn in Marion County, go with St. Augustine Floratam for a lush appearance, or Bahia if you have a larger property and want lower maintenance and water costs. We can help you assess your specific soil, shade conditions, and irrigation setup before you order a single pallet.
